Belgium 1972

The fourth UEFA European Football Championship had the same qualifying format to 1968, but with eight groups of four teams, and without the British Home Nation Group. The winners will commence to a quarter final round, played in two legs. The winners will progress to the championship in 1972.

Soviet's fourth appearance in the Finals

The quarter final stages saw all four teams from the previous tournament, Italy, Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), England and The Soviets Union, playing for a place in the semi finals for a second year in succession. Only the experienced The Soviet Union, made it through, beating last years finalists Yugoslavia. The Soviets has made an appearance in every single Euro Championship since it started in 1960. Holders Italy lost out to Belgium, who would eventually become the host nation, West Germany beats 1968 Third place England. The last quarter final saw Hungary beating Romania in a reply, marking their second appearance in the Euro Championships

West Germany knocked the hosts Belguim out with a 2-1 victory, while The Soviets made it to their third, out of a possible four, final by narrowly winning 1-0 against Hungary. Only to be blown away by the Germans, 3-0.
