Sweden 1992

Sweden hosted Euro 1992, and is the ninth European Football Championship. Eight countries to participate, including already qualifed host, Sweden. The Soviet Union qualified for the finals shortly before the country dissoluted. They took part in the tournament under the name of The CIS, whilst the former Soviet Republics formed their own national team.

Denmark's remarkable road to victory

Yugoslavia also qualified for the finals, but because of the Yugoslav Wars, the team was disqualified and Denmark replaced them, as they finished runners-up in their qualifying stage. Euro 1992 marked the first major football competition in which had player's names printed on their backs.

The semi finals saw, tournament favourites, Germany, against the hosts, Sweden, where the Germans went through 3-2 in a intensive semi final. Denmark, qualifed very narrowly in the group stages (they werent meant to be at the champsionship) beat the holders, The Netherlands, on penalities. Marco Van Basten's penalty was saved by Manchester United's Peter Schmeichel, probably the best goalkeeper during that time. Denmark completed the fairytale ending by winning the final 2-0 against Germany in the final, with Arsenal's John Jensen among the scorers.
